Derek Welton to début at La Scala as Wotan/Wanderer

Derek Welton will make his début at the famed Teatro alla Scala, Milan, as Wotan in Die Walküre on 11 March and Wanderer in Siegfried on 13 March 2026, under the baton of Simone Young and directed by Sir David McVicar.

This house début follows shortly after his recent success as Wanderer in Siegfried at the Opéra national de Paris. The performances come in the middle of a busy month, beginning with concert performances of Act 2 of Tristan und Isolde with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, which were praised by the press:

‘As King Mark, bass-baritone Derek Welton sang with a rounded beauty to his voice that captured both the King’s devastation with sustained, smooth-toned mournfulness and his royal demeanor with proclamatory power.’ — Houston Chronicle

‘Derek Welton was nobly sonorous as the betrayed King Marke’ — The Dallas Morning News

The following week, on 21 March, Welton makes his role début as John Claggart in Billy Budd at the Opéra de Lyon.
